Dresden (12/1/13)

After leaving Berlin we took a little drive to Dresden. Primarily, we went to Dresden for the Christmas markets, but saw some other buildings as well. When we arrived we took a short walking tour of part of the city.

As we were walking we came to the Zwinger Palace. It is considered one of the most famous Baroque buildings in Germany. Today it houses museums and special events and concerts are held there.

Back out on the street again.

This was supposed to be the secret bridge from the kings castle to his mistresses castle...not very secret if you ask me.

This mural is 101 meters long and depicts the history of the Wettins, Saxony's ruling family. The mural has over 24000 tiles.used to represent 35 margraves, princes, and kings as well as 59 scientists, artisans, farmers, and craftsmen.

This is the Frauenkirch

right in the middle of town they are doing some archaeological excavation.

We had to wait a little while to be able to get into the Frauenkirch, but finally we are able to get in...it is a lovely church.

Then back out on the street and to the Christmas market fun.

This is one of the 150 certified bakers for stollen in Germany...they really take their stollen seriously. If it doesnt have the special seal then it is not true stollen. This happens to be one of the booths at the traditional Christmas market...this year was the markets 579th anniversary.

We stopped to have a little tea in this cute little antique cafe...really, you can eat there but you can also buy anything they have in the place. Talk about ever changing decor.

This is the Dresden Cathedral, aka the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity or the Catholic Church of the Royal Family of Saxony.

outside of the Cathedral

the Semperoper in Dresden (the opera house)

And with that we bid adieu to Dresden (and hopes that we sleep enough on the bus to not be dragging in the morning, since the bus got back at about 1 am and that meant work just a few hours after).
