Two days of Spring break have already come and gone...man, they sure take forever to get here and leave so quickly.
Not much to be able to share about Easter...no grands close by so no egg hunts etc. but I did want to share, yet again, one of the coolest things ever. This is my lovely golden Easter egg (although it doesn't appear to seem quite so golden in the picture, but really the egg shell is a pretty metallic gold)...yes, lovely to look at, but wait, there's more...
Once you crack the egg shell, just as you would a hard boiled egg...viola you get...
A chocolate egg inside the egg shell. How cool is that? They hollow out a real egg and fill it with chocolate :)
OK, so now you have seen yet another coolest things ever, on to the days event: The Roman Archaeological Park of Villa Borg. A little history on the place (from their pamphlet): More than 100 years ago, a teacher called Johann Schneider discovered traces of a Roman settlement between Borg and Oberleuken and carried out the first small-scale excavations. Since 1 April 1987, the cultural foundation for the district of Merzig-Wadern collaboration with the state conservation office, the public employment service and the municipality of Perl, have all been involved in the scientific excavation of a Roman villa in Borg. It has emerged that the site hides the remains of one of the largest Roman villa complexes in the MoselSaar region, and in 1994 the decision was taken to reconstruct the entire site in line with the discoveries made during excavation work and current knowledge of Roman villas. Since then, the villa baths, the tavern, the manor with a museum section, the courtyard, the residential building and workshop area, and the gatehouse have all been rebuilt. The ongoing nature of the work means that the appearance of the complex changes almost daily. Excavation work on the site, which covers an area of more than 7.5 hectares, also continues, and currently the Roman kitchen is being reconstructed.
Admittedly, we kind of went for the gardens and the excavation, but mainly we went today because it was actually open on Easter...which makes sense when you think Roman place...not exactly historically best buds with the idea of Christianity (if you know what I mean). At any rate a few of us decided to check the place out. Of course we decided it was best to eat first...you know for the strength to explore the surroundings (actually it was a good idea to do since we were almost done eating when a bunch of others showed up).
The menu of course was in Latin and German. Honestly, the only real thing that I remember from taking Latin was Volare...and that was not on the menu...but I muddled through the German and figured how could I go wrong with chicken...so I ended up with chicken in a wine sauce with leaks and coriander, rice and roasted veggies...pretty tasty actually.
No need to worry that you might starve at this place...I left half the food on my plate because it was so much.
Once fortified we went on to explore (yes, believe it or not, we even had moments with sunshine):
obviously the full swing of Spring has not happened here...shame because this garden is surrounded by hedges that once the fill in will make it almost like a maze. |
table top shuffleboard??? |
one of the baths |
another bath |
I think this is the fireplace to keep the water in the bath hot (the second bath shown above) |
loved this floor |
nothing like privacy in the bathroom |
the ceiling in one room |
part of the actual excavation |
Some proof that spring has sort of sprung...at least it is greening up and look there was actually some blue sky too :)
